The Pomodoro technique for long study sessions

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a university student. The method is simple: 25 minutes of focused work, then a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes.

The science behind it is more interesting than the simplicity suggests. Our brains aren't designed for sustained, unbroken focus. Attention naturally fluctuates in cycles of roughly 90 minutes (ultradian rhythms), with shorter peaks of high focus within those cycles. The Pomodoro technique works with these rhythms rather than against them.

The 5-minute break isn't wasted time — it's when your brain consolidates what you just learned. The default mode network, active during rest, is involved in memory consolidation and creative insight. Skipping breaks doesn't make you more productive; it makes you less.

For STEM study specifically, the technique pairs well with active recall. Use each 25-minute block for a single, specific task: solve five problems, derive a formula from memory, write a summary of one concept. The constraint forces focus and prevents the diffuse 'studying' that feels productive but isn't.

Practical tip: use a physical timer, not your phone. The act of winding a timer creates a small ritual that signals to your brain that focused work is beginning. And keeping your phone out of reach during the 25 minutes removes the biggest source of interruption.
